Casa 4 is a project by Francesco Ducato/Stardust*. A family house in the country-side of Marsala in Sicily (Italy).
Casa 4* works on the idea of “unfinished” (non finito).
Picasso wrote: “Unfinished, a picture remains alive, dangerous. A finished work is a dead work, killed”.
Based on this concept the project works on an open program, capable to absorb the transformations related to the constantly changing needs of a contemporary family.
The Casa 4 can become the Casa 5, 6…The structure has been calculated to allow its vertical development and its position on the land-lot makes possible its horizontal development.
In this way the project becomes a reinterpretation in a positive way of the phenomenon of the Sicilian (and Italian) Incompletion so present in the landscape that has been defined by the collective of artists Alterazioni Video as one of the more relevant italian architectural styles from the Second World war until today.
In this sense the Casa 4 is “unfinished” and ephemeral (temporary) architecture. Its typology, functions and materials have been thought keeping in consideration their origins, transformation and reuse.
Its pergola, the technological “dammuso”, is the link between the Casa 4 and the nature. Thanks to the pergola, the nature reoccupy a space that was taken for the construction of the house.
The pergola is also the place where the technological devices are placed. They are used to get the energy from the natural forces (mainly the sun and the wind) to make of the Casa 4 a cell of energy production instead of consumption.
Around the building-site of the Casa 4 will be realized the laboratory of the international workshop Ephemeral Arts Connection establishing a conceptual link between the contemporary architecture, the ephemeral arts and the Sicilian Incompletion.
*The Casa 4 is considered one of the most relevant projects of contemporary architecture realized by young emergent sicilian architects. Has been published and exposed in several italian and international context. In 2007 the project has been selected for the exhibition “Italian Style” in Chicago and in 2010 has been part of the exhibition “SiciliaOlanda 2.0” together with other 9 projects from young sicilian architects and 4 projects of young architects form Netherlands selected by the NAI (Netherlands Architecture Institute). In this exhibition met for first time the project “Sicilian Incompletion” from Alterazioni Video and the Casa 4 that in two different but parallel ways work on the idea of “incompletion” and “unfinished” during the last years.
